Smartphone cameras have come a long way in the last decade, or even the last 5 years. You have a device that can capture 960 FPS, HDR video, and 4K resolution that you can carry around in your pocket.

Pretty much. That being said, even with all the clever processing tricks and improved lens, they are still no match for a proper camera with good glass, large sensor, etc... even today, I still look at my iPhone XS Max vs my amateur DSLR (Canon EOS 200D aka Rebel SL2 in the US) and the DSLR smashes it everytime. Little things like the speed at which it can focus/take photos and take burst photos make a huge difference even in point and shoot mode, before you start to consider playing with the aperture and shutter speeds, etc... and of course, different lenses for different purposes. The downside to all that is just the size and hassle of it all which for candid photography, isn't great, but if you can plan ahead a little and set it up beforehand, you will get amazing shots.
