He was doing it for the camera. If he did it on his leg the camera wouldn't have seen it and it would have been pointless.

What starts out as a 4chan hoax ends up getting associated with the thing
So when you use the symbol in a way that does not match playing the game its associated with or flashing it in a manner that does not match its original meaning, it kind of comes off as being what it was hijacked to be
