In the cavemen times the bully would take other cavemen's food, he would take the most space at the cave, the best furs to cover from the cold, etc. He would be a terrible person, but he would also be the best provider for a cavewoman's cave-kids.
Society and our minds have evolved since, but our biology hasn't. This is not a "ogogog ur anti-womyn! teh sexist!" moment, men also have remnants of their cavemen biology, e.g. bullying, aggression and stubborness are bad traits now, but men still have them because well, we're still cavemen at a biological level. That's also why men want young, fertile women.
