Topic | When did you guys realize you weren't racist? |
Flockaveli 12/10/19 9:47:46 AM #42: | Never was, I grew up in a predominantly black housing project in a predominantly black neighborhood and made predominantly black friends. I remember my parents being racist. Mexicans are pretty anti-black, at least back in the mainland. They'd say shit like how I shouldn't hang out with my black friends because they'll steal my bike, or how I'm going to get into trouble hanging out with them because they're doing things they shouldn't do. The CRAZIEST one was when they said my black friends can't come over because they eat all our food, because their parents are too lazy to cook for them. I remember thinking "Well, if someone needs help, why wouldn't we help them? That's what we're taught in church, right?" Mom, dad, aunts, uncles, cousins who migrated to the states, even other Mexicans who I knew but wasn't related to, they were anti-black at some point in their lives. There's definitely a correlation between how "Pro/Conservative/Traditionally Mexican" one is and how racist they are. Westernized and American-born Mexicans (like me) are very open. If I ever heard a Mexican say some anti-black shit in 2019, it's from some guy who just got here like a year ago. It's definitely something that's going to continue being less and less of a problem as time goes by. For some reason, Mexican parents and natives are not afraid of being called out on their shitty behavior and are willing to learn, or more accurately, un-learn problematic behavior. Over time, their racism diminishes from just being around black people regularly and learning that we're not all that different. --- I'm in Chicago, I'm shaking my head. ... Copied to Clipboard! |
