With our ridiculous two-party system, people often have to pick a few issues that are most important to them and get behind the party that supports those issues.
The Republicans that I know mostly vote that way for one of a few narrow reasons. Such as:
1. Abortion - They feel that abortion is murder and is is so morally wrong that they are obligated to vote against it.
2. Fear of Socialism - They feel that the left is pushing too far into socialism and that socialism would basically destroy our country.

I know people who are Democratic in almost every viewpoint and who don't even like Republican policies that much BUT feel so strongly against abortion that they vote Republican. Then in a textbook example of confirmation bias and choice-support bias, when they start discussing their voting choice as a whole (rather than each issue separately) they tend to back away a bit from their usual criticisms of Republican policies.
