When it comes to respecting the canon and SW, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are the type of people who would put more thought into when is and isn't it appropriate to have a Gonk droid in the background than JJ will put into his entire movies. The only reason the man started doing the Star Trek films in the first place was because he thought at the time that was the closest he'll ever get to doing a Star Wars film Let's put it this way, he has no reverence. You can "care" about something in an entirely vain way. Like "can you believe I chopped down this famous ancient Redwood tree?" Like you could say "clearly he cares about that tree insofar as he's proud to be involved" but you can also say "clearly he doesn't care because he had no concern over how his actions were destroying the thing" It's like if a person who is a stalker of a famous person and ends up killing them. Did they "care" about that person? In some ways very much yes and in some ways very much no.
