Release order. The whole point of a prequel is that you're supposed to have seen the movie it's prequel to, first. Rogue One and Solo takes for granted that you've already watched at least six Star Wars movies.


You could perfectly understand Solo and Rogue One just from having seen the OT. Hell, probably from just seeing ANH.

Depends a little bit what you mean. "Perfectly understand" isn't entirely accurate since there's a bunch of small details seeping in from The Clone Wars as well as the PT. And that's not really the point, either. I could reasonably understand episode II or episode VIII if I hadn't watched any other. The point is that the movies are written with an audience that's watched all the other stuff in mind. As such, there's no real benefit to a chronological order.
