I'm a math teacher. Yes, math has its share of history rooted in racism and sexism.
Many of history's greatest mathematicians were women and people of color.
Today a disproportionate number of math (and STEM in general) majors are held by white men because it was less than a century ago that we even began to consider letting women and minorities have access to a quality education.
Much of how math was historically taught lends itself to western culture, which further keeps other groups from learning math. Nowadays we try to offer more equitable practices.
We can use math as a teaching tool to analyze social injustices through data analysis and drawing conclusions, allowing students a way to facilitate conversations that include thorough reasoning and problem solving.
Not teaching people math doesnt make math racist it just means racists were teaching it. ---
