The literal troll characters have 4 different "kids" of love they can feel simultaneously so that shippers can create endless relationship pairings. It was basically designed for thirsty fanfiction writers. That was designed to make fun them actually. But of course shippers and fanfic writers embraced that. And I guess Hussie did too eventually. I think one of my favorite things about Homestuck was how two backers for the kickstarter that eventually became Hiveswap paid 10k each for their OC trolls to appear in the comic.
