One's family should, ideally, be one of the most nurturing, sympathetic, and affectionate networks one has. I would personally expect the attitude you're displaying to be reflected from someone who did not grow up in a good house hold with nurturing parents. If they gave you what you needed to not only survive, but thrive, then honestly you're an asshole to want to have nothing to do with them in their last stage of their lives. But you're totally correct. You're not lawfully required to take care of your parents at all. You don't even need to feel obligated to ever speak to them ever again if you truly don't want to.
