See, this is one chief difference.

Science fiction is generally within or bordering the realm of possibility and/or the unknown. Maybe there are aliens that can come invade earth. Maybe we can eventually build robots with complex AI or maybe even sentience. Sometimes there are a couple of generally-accepted stretches like FTL or time travel when the story otherwise wouldn't work.

But fantasy, by contrast, presents a universe where the fantastical/impossible simply is. People shoot lightning bolts out of books. A flying reptile spits fire out of its mouth. Why? How does this work? Where did these things come from? Irrelevant. Our world's rules don't apply.
