No, even the origin of the name points to how stupid the "phenomenon" is.

A whole room of people were convinced that Nelson Mandela died in captivity instead of becoming the leader of South Africa. Despite the fact that he was a notable public figure well into the 2000's, appearing on the news and acting on behalf of his nation for decades.

A room full of ignorant people became convinced that they had lived in a world where Nelson Mandela actually died before achieving the pinnacle of his success, and instead of acknowledging it as a giant blind spot, they spun it off into this fantasy of having lived in an alternate dimension where they witnessed their version of reality.

Everything about that story is fucking stupid.

Ok but "the Mandela effect" actually refers to the mass misrecollection rather than the associated multiverse nonsense.
