Keep it.

She caught it in our backyard, before the dog could chomp on it.

It was a decent size, so I figured it would be fairly hardy and easy enough for her to care for with our help without it croaking.

So we put it in a small tank (my daughter usually puts bugs she catches in here) with some dirt and branches and head out to the pet store, to find out what kind of lizard it is, and what to get for it.

The pet store welcomes us, we explain the situation, they think it's a cute story and ask us to show the lizard, saying it was probably an anole or a leapord gecko as those are common here... until they see it. Then their eyes bug out of their head.

The things not an adult, despite being larger than most lizards we see running around, it's a baby, it's basically the equivalent of a monitor lizard, and it's going to get freaking massive.

They say it's a tengu. And this things not native to this state. I dont even think its native in the us. Everything I look up says they're native to central and south america? What was it doing in my backyard? And why, out of all the lizards running around for my daughter to catch, did she she snag the one that's going to turn Into freaking Godzilla?
