Frankly, that's the only thing that redeems the absolute steamer that was the last few minutes of Season One. Asami gave him a job and became his girlfriend, Korra uncovered her father's Equalist ties and led to her losing her privileged home life, she uses what resources and wit she can to rig up devices for the crew... only for Mako, the guy who got her into this whole mess, to drop her like a hot potato and hook up with the Avatar after a season of growing neglect for Asami.

It was a scummy twist that was excused by the fans in the trashiest fucking way ("they didn't know if they would get a second season! they had to cram it in there!") instead of acknowledging that they didn't have to shoehorn a relationship upgrade into the last 5 minutes of the season. It did Asami dirty, and it was just so fucking cheap.

I remember Mako being like "wow Korra hot, oh but shipping episode say we better as friends, but Korra hot even though me have girlfriend, oh girlfriend's life is ruined, but brah like seriously Korra hot". Growing from distrust to friends to lovers, with a mutual ex who didn't treat them right, feels like more of a romantic arc than Fuckboy Mako ever had.
