I'm guessing it's an evolutionary response with the idea that poor hygiene will likely mean poor health. It's why we find things like yellow teeth unattractive - we wouldn't want to mate with someone who might not have the health to see through the raising of our offspring.

Seeing as how less then half of children made it to elementary school age back then did it really matter how good the parents were?


You're looking at it the wrong way round, it makes it even more important LOL - you'd want to mate with the healthiest possible woman in the hope they'd pass on those genetics to the child and give them a better chance.
