I'm not sure why beards are a thing among any humanoids. They don't seem to convey any real benefit (unless it's just to make their heads look bigger and disguise where the neck begins?)

Head hair serves no benefit either. It's just for looks. :p

It provides sun protection and additional heat regulation. The beard isn't placed properly to effect either of those things and, more importantly, it had a similar effect, women would have beards as well.
