So instead they sell fear. You'll notice that hiring undocumented immigrants doesn't get punished very hard at all. They WANT undocumented immigrants in this country so they can exploit them. This is why a wall is a popular measure. It wouldn't actually do much to stop them from coming in, but it plays to the base very well.
