Playing a game like this reminds me of a time when video game development was so creative (and not so absurdly costly) that you could make a whole new game while working on a prototype for a completely different game. It's a really testament to video game development at the turn of the century.

Hell, look at Squaresoft back in the day. They turned two concepts for FF7 into two separate games (Xenogears and Parasite Eve respectively), acquired Quest and made a Tactics Ogre game with Final Fantasy branding, made an excellent dungeon crawler (Vagrant Story) which was a spin-off of Tactics (Matsuno flip-flops to this day over whether VS is really in Ivalice or if it was just fanservice) and at one point the aforementioned Xenogears was going to be Chrono Cross, or at least its engine was supposed to be used for it.

Development costs are getting to out of hand. Companies like Square could make so many different, experimental projects back then. Now they spend all their time on a big Hail Mary plagued by development hell once ever half a decade. The last mainline FF game to not go into development hell was FF11 in freakin' 2002.

We were thinking of naming the baby Ellipsis, but it seemed so...typographical.
