Movies don't exist in a vacuum. If TFA came out before ANH then it might actually be considered original. TC, I share your opinion of the new movies but I don't think you should be so harsh on others for their choice. It's not a good way to win people over. I have no idea why this is happening, but recent media has been so obsessed with sUbVeRtInG eXpEcTaTiOnS that they've stopped caring about crafting relatable characters, heartfelt stories, and tight narratives. The Game of Thrones disaster is just the latest example. Doing unexpected things makes sense and should be valued, if it rewards the emotional investment of your viewers rather than mocking it. For Rian Johnson to suggest that fans were foolish for being disappointed about Rey's parentage when her entire character had no room for growth or exploration besides her parents is completely ridiculous. Rey's introduction in TFA was fabulous. We see the beginnings of, God forbid, an interesting character with relatable traits that could evolve over the trilogy. That's thrown out the window when she's never shown to have any flaws, and as I said, her one area of interest was cast aside for Johnson's precious subversion. It makes all mention of her parents before the reveal a waste of time and attention. Luke's character was obviously butchered. Arguably no one knows him better than Mark Hamill, and he wasn't shy at all about his disappointment. Kylo had potential, but it's clear in TLJ that they didn't know what to do with him. His goals and motivations aren't present besides being pissed off at Luke, and then full-blown insane. Hux's promising character was thrown in the garbage for the sake of a joke. Snoke has the same problem as Rey's parents. "Haha you pathetic imbeciles, no one said that Snoke would be an important villain!" On a rewatch, anything involving Snoke is useless. We don't know how he contributed to Kylo's fall, where he was during Palpatine's reign, why he appears to be the strongest Force user in the franchise so far... --- Though the fear of death is a common one, the fear of life is a more rational one. ...
