I have a friend who's kind of like that. He's been through the cycle of being addicted to heroin, losing everything, and starting over at least 2-3 times now and he's only in his early 30's. He's been so depressed that I literally needed to leave work one day in the middle of a snowstorm to drive to his place and talk him down from suicide.

There gets to be a point where you just need to stop worrying about him. If he's so determined to be depressed and impose uselessness onto himself, there's nothing you can do, beyond a point. I know it sucks, but you just need to learn to let go.

That not to say cut all ties or anything like that. If this friend I'm referring to ever came to me needing help, I'd help him out, within reason. I even try and reach out to him from time to time. But you need to emotionally remove yourself from him. Spending too much time on people like that will ruin your life.
