Out of curiosity, why'd you get fired?

tl;dr worked well for 2.5 years, boss gave me a >15% raise, a $30,000 retention bonus if I continued working for three additional years, and a letter of commendation. Then he hired an engineer that used to work at Palm in the past to serve as my manager, he asks if I'm very religious, I say "not really," he replies "I'm super religious." Three weeks into him getting hired I start receiving reprimands so I work harder. Continue to receive reprimands, I work even harder, document all my work, maintain great relationships with everyone else including customers.

Monday my boss sits me down and says it's not working out and fires me.

I am not lying when I say I did in fact work harder than I had in the past, and my boss did enjoy having me around before then (I have a signed letter stating as such), I do not know if my manager legitimately disliked me for my answer to his religion question or thought I was an entitled dickhead that didn't work hard or both. Honestly I completed all of my work, I just didn't do it with a chipper smile 24/7, I can't fake that "we're one big family!" enthusiasm.

One thing that rubbed me the wrong way about my manager is that when dealing with a vendor of ours he complained to me that the guy over the phone didn't sound excited/chipper enough to talk to him, I can't fucking deal with that smarmy shit.
