If there's an HR, isnt' there also employee orientation/training which also talks about grounds for termination including dereliction, even if HR doesn't call their emergency contacts? Emergency contacts are for when an employee is injured while on the job, not a line of defense against termination. I can only speak for myself, but I didn't get anything like that when I first started working there (then again, I came in as an mid-senior level, not a new entry level). So I'm not entirely sure how the thing is suppose to work as well.
