Pokemon was unlikely to be the main focus of E3 anyway because that's just not how the Pokemon Company operates (as evidenced by... this)

Yeah, Pokemon sort of exists in their own separate world from the rest of Nintendo with the mainline games being mostly promoted by The Pokemon Company with Nintendo having only a minor role in their promotion.

Pokemon has never been in the position where it's the $60 holiday game Nintendo is pushing. The last time Pokemon was set-up to be the focus, Nintendo had Breath of the Wild to showcase. I think Nintendo breaking Super Mario Maker 2 and Pokemon away from E3 suggests that Nintendo doesn't want those two titles to dwarf their E3 showcase like Smash did last year.

If it's not going to be Pokemon or Super Mario Maker 2, then I'm not sure what will be the heavily pushed game at E3 this year. Fire Emblem doesn't feel like a game that would be pushed heavily, and I'm not sure if Animal Crossing will be either.
