Your assertion that bashing it over the head would be more merciful isn't even accurate. What if he doesn't have the physical strength to kill it in one blow? What if it takes 5? 10? Where the raccoon is in agony, bleeding and broken the whole time? Especially on a boat, where you are unlikely to have solid footing and the ability to land a clean hit on a fleeing animal. Pushing it off the boat is a far more practical solution.
