I do think it stems ultimately from privilege where most of the harm the GOP is and has been doing wouldn't affect him so he fails to see that Trump is a symptom and logical progression of the Republican party, not some outlier and cause of its current state. Certainly I don't think he's equipped to deal with the very real problems posed by the GOP because he can't even recognize or identify them.
