See I didn't hate the Melfi stuff at all aside from how heavy handed it felt when they showed the definition highlighted in her book and made it clear that it was about Tony never changing. I felt she should have recognized that far before or, at minimum, by herself instead of how forced it felt.

i thought the way melfi's ending went fit perfectly with the overall theme of the show (change).

for years melfi went through this same song and dance: seeing Tony, being simultaneously disgusted by & attracted to him, etc. she knew from very early on that he didnt want to change, and the nature of their relationship was transactional from BOTH sides. Tony gets a safe place to vent and Melfi gets to explore her attraction to Tony's power & lifestyle.

then one day melfi has that discussion at the dinner table and makes the snap decision to take a stance and make a change & cut tony out of her life. melfi didnt have some divine moment of clarity, there wasn't some elaborate event that opened her eyes, she just decided to take a stand and break the cycle, in a very real & very simple way.

it's what Tony, Chris, Vito, Tony B, etc all failed to do. they feel trapped in these circumstances but the reality is that they all do it to themselves, these are the choices they are making.
