They weren't libertarians. They joined the movement for the wrong reasons.

Heck, Cliven Bundy's arguments against the federal government back in the cattle grazing standoff some years back are actually the same types of arguments used by indigenous people who claim that governments are coming in and messing with land that their families have been using for generations, before the government had ever even come to those areas.


I agree with your assertion that people who are "true" Libertarians, as much as I disagree with them on plenty of political positions, are actually more in favor of an open borders policy. But the fact is a lot of these militia movements for the last 40 years or so have been a hot bed for far right wing nationalism, hence why you see plenty of their members go from being libertarian to ancap to fashy. And there's been plenty of cases of this over the years that I'd be happy to cite if needed.

If Ammon Bundy is actually a tried and true Libertarian with a consistent ideology, then that's great. But it doesn't shock me that the people who respond the best to that style of rhetoric tend to be those who would be staunch far right and, by proxy, Trump supporters.
