Humans are naturally tribalistic and engage in othering behavior based on observed differences and similarities. This can manifest in many ways. One of which is racism.

We are also pattern-seeking by nature, which is handy, but also leads to false-positives. So, say you are white and you have a few experiences with seeing some black people engaging in criminal behavior, then we typically passively apply that trait to other blacks and are more wary of them.

Then we add the social element and those stereotypes are codified and reinforced.

That's how I see it anyway.
