So why isn't Mario SFFing Samus this time around despite Odyssey behind him? Samus has had literally zero reason to boost.
Based on Tifa vs Sephiroth, Mario is still SFFing Samus. It just isn't nearly as bad as it was in 2005. It seems like users just aren't as willing to fall in line as they used to. While Link still put the hurt on Ganondorf, it wasn't anything like their 2004 match.
I think female power in general has to be factored in as well.

Female characters are more respected than 15 years ago when he site was still full of sexist nerds.
Yeah that's probably a factor, I think people get more receptive to female characters as they mature, just like we get more interested in sophisticated stuff like character development. It's less about wanting to see badass things and more about wanting to see different types of storytelling, and female characters deliver on that when you are someone who is used to male protagonists all the time.

For example, I'm playing Tales of Berseria right now and the least interesting character in the party is the badass samurai (Rokurou) who loves swords. Because I've seen that character a dozen times before (though he is lovable so I like him).
The most interesting character is the kid (Laphicet), because he's a rare example of a well written kid in a game, and the rest of the characters are mostly women, and are all great. I's just fun to see them interacting.
I just wanna see different things at this point. I'd love a Zelda game starring Zelda, for example.
