What would you have me say instead then?

Anything other than "I feel bad for you". Imagine someone says that to you for a minor thing you did. How you feel about that?

Okay so like what then? What would have been a better way to convey acknowledgement that you were having difficulties with something I can't relate to? I appreciate that you're coming from a positive and helpful angle here, but some examples would give me more to go on. Also, for the record, I used to the word defensive mostly because you called the other guy a dick and said you would keep it up to annoy him.

I actually can't think of a replacement for "I feel bad for you" just cause it's so far from an expression Id use. I have a deep reason for that but Im not trying to talk about it atm >_>. Wish I could give a better answer but it's just not hitting me

Okay, well I apologize in any case. As I said, the situation is one to which I can't relate, so if I'm insensitive about it, it's just because I don't understand it. The misunderstanding goes both ways though.
