As Nintendo has branched out into using more of their characters to promote products (secondary Mario crew, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Squid Girl) Mario has taken a backseat role. He's still the biggest face of the company, but a couple decades ago, he was the SOLE face of the company, and those days are gone. Also, being put into more interactions with Smash characters who simply have more interesting aesthetics or abilities have highlighted the relatively mundane nature of Mario's design.
