In cleaning out my dad's estate, I found a stack of home-made DVDs with family videos on them. I want to dump all the photos and related stuff on my sister, but I figure I out to copy the digital media first. I bought an external HD to put these ~30 DVDs onto (as well as about as many CDs of pictures) and I'm having trouble getting the data. I mean, I can just straight copy the literal files, but that's not going to make the stuff viewable later. So I went looking for ripping software to convert to MP4 or some other format that doesn't require the full ISO.

I tried Handbrake. It didn't work.

I tried WinX DVD Ripper. It was slow as fuck, despite claiming to be the best on the market, and in the end I only had the first 5 minutes of each video.

Suggestions?
