Dreams are just your brain's defrag.

Came in to literally say this.

Pretty much every dream interpretation book or guide you've ever seen is basically bullshit. Dreams are just your brain sorting through random chunks of memory and images and shuffling them up like a deck of cards. There's no unconscious or subconscious meaning to it, no deep-seated presence or hidden awareness feeding you secret messages.

At most, if you dream something that seems meaningful, it's because you're more likely to dream about things that you think about a lot or that were vividly in your awareness that day. But it can just as easily be something you haven't thought of for a long time, because dreams can dredge crap out of the nooks and crannies as well. Most of the meaning people try and read into dreams is just apophenia.

It's also worth noting that you have tons of dreams in a given night - you only remember the ones that happen right before you wake up, that are still in your mind when your consciousness kicks back in. Because for the most part, our ability to retain memories is shut off while we're sleeping, so any dream you have where you don't wake up is almost immediately forgotten right afterwards.
