James Alex Fields Jr., who has pleaded not guilty in the death of Heather Heyer, was being attended by staff at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail when Timothy Ray Brown Jr. dodged an officer and hit Fields "twice on the left side of his body above his shoulders," per a news release, which adds that "at no time did Inmate Fields have an opportunity to defend himself." A friend of Brown's tells the AP that he was a friend of Heyer, and that both were with her when the car plowed into the crowd.
