How would one describe a "real" job then? Something with stability and/or benefits? I personally wouldn't call this line of work a long term career but he is earning money for service he is providing. If not a "real" job what would it be called then?

You could just call it a source of income. It's certainly what he does for a living, but that's not the same thing as a job.

It's pretty meaningful, considering he has no employer nor is he contracted to work. He's essentially a busker and busking isn't a job.

Sure, if he saves his money and lives within his means for the rest of his life. Given that he's still young, that could be hard to do since he has a lot of life ahead of him.
