This has been proven false.
At the very least, you can shame assholes into silence and make their continued asshole behavior cost them jobs, elections, friends, etc. We don't need to feel sorry that assholes are uncomfortable. I couldn't care less about their comfort, because they don't care about ours as a society; that's why they're 'assholes.'
We need to provide sufficient motivation for them to stop being assholes, put some teeth behind those words.
Shame does nothing. Make them lose their jobs, send them into poverty and forget about them. Actual consequences would be much more effective.
