I have seen the argument that the US was there as a supporting ally and it was the South's war anyway, which is true but misleading. The North won, regardless. It was a costly victory for the North, though. They lost nearly 19 soldiers for every American that died (3.5 Northerners, if you add the Southern force's losses, even by conservative estimates).
