Wow, never seen that one before. I have seen the argument that the US was there as a supporting ally and it was the South's war anyway, which is true but misleading. The North won, regardless. It was a costly victory for the North, though. They lost nearly 19 soldiers for every American that died (3.5 Northerners, if you add the Southern force's losses, even by conservative estimates). But just like Homer Simpson, you can get hit and hit and hit, but still win if your opponent is too tired or frustrated to continue.
