There's really no truly effective treatment for mental illness out there. It's all basically just trading one imbalance for another, one set of symptoms for another. A lot of stuff can cause long-term damage, particularly if prescribed during youth. They can snuff out a lot of potential, make you lose the things that make you who you are. Some people may find the drugged version of them preferable, but I think the majority will not. Especially after treatment has persisted for several years.

It's a shame that medicine really just exists to treat the symptoms. Especially since for decades now they have taken the approach that serotonin is always the culprit when in reality it plays a small role or possibly no role at all in most people. They should be looking at nutritional deficiencies and the root causes of those if it isn't as simple as poor diet. Inflammation and histamine response, potential autoimmune conditions, etc. Get right to the heart of the problem, don't just knock it back with pills.
