When people find out I'm a veteran they usually say "Thank you for your service" or even "sacrifice"... I was an engineer, basically a glorified construction worker. Appreciate the sentiment, but personally haven't sacrificed much of anything. Never been in combat. Never done anything remotely heroic. And you know what? Probably 70% of service members are in that category. There are certainly soldiers who deserve praise and respect, but just like any other job there's plenty of plain, average folks doing boring, menial work. There's also plenty of assholes and downright criminal pieces of shit in the military.
