I get that, but the kicking of the dirt seems to be a trademark of some sort. Like someone did it before, got famous, and other go to copy them

I don't know the origin, but it's something that's happened throughout baseball history. This is dating back all the way to the 1800s. It likely started with some manager or player doing it and others just picked up on it and it just went from there.
