If that is the case, it wouldn't be surprising that people who had relatively progressive or liberal political positions years ago wouldn't qualify as that today. I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head. It's why conservatism in general, remains a mainstay. It's balance within a civilization. A push and pull.
