I think it is the nature of progressive liberal politics to push boundaries further and further left, compared to conservative politics which seems more about securing the status quo and traditionalism.

If that is the case, it wouldn't be surprising that people who had relatively progressive or liberal political positions years ago wouldn't qualify as that today.

I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head. It's why conservatism in general, remains a mainstay. It's balance within a civilization. A push and pull. One political party becomes the status-quo with too much power... the remedy for that sickness naturally arises if people are allowed the freedom.
