4G in the US (different from 4G LTE) is just code name for HSPA+ which if I'm not wrong about is just an improved version of 3G. Locally I get 10mbps on it. I haven't been on a legit 3G band in a long time, at least not how it was defined upon release. Most of those were upgraded.

"4G" is Wi-Max which is basically cell towers with microwaves

LTE is a totally different thing but the speeds are about the same.

Qualcomm torpedoed Wi-Max to death by using contract leverage over apple to refuse to adopt it for iPhones in favor of LTE. Guess who makes a lot of LTE antennas...
