Asylum most definitely had the Metroidvania formula with getting new gadgets and backtracking to use those new gadgets in areas you passed previously. I'm definitely not the first person to ever mention this. Metroidvanias are all 2d. There's literally nothing that says they have to be 2D. Metroidvania is a style of gameplay and that's it.
