I'm trying, but I haven't had one in 8 years so it's hard. Plus I'm actually qualified for SSI, I'm not just using it to be lazy. I actually have legitimately disabling conditions.

Yes, the idea of working for free sucks but any resume that makes it to an employer with "I ain't done shit for the last 8 years" is getting immediately thrown in the trash.
Volunteering, however, you likely won't be turned down.
Then when you go to an employer, you can be like "I volunteered for 1 or 2 years at this place while living on my GF's income." and they won't immediately throw it in the trash which means you now have a chance where as you had no chance before.
He could even consider his payment to be what he's already collecting from tax payers. In that way, it's not working for free. ---
