Let's look at this from the perspective of someone living in a city and not the middle of no where. Big difference between getting paid $20 an hour vs. Having the option to tip 20% It's not because a tip isn't very optional these days. People are ostracized and ridiculed and are made to feel guilty about not tipping. I live in New York and have friends who work in fast food and who are waiters. The fast food workers who work overtime get about $30,000 a year. The average waiter gets $50,000. The average waiter gets much more that highest earning fast food guy.
