Mandatory "Smash Bros. is a fighting game" post. Yeah, it's definitely not in the same category as more traditional fighters, but you literally have to beat your opponent up just as every other fighter out there.

Even though fighting games aren't in my favorite genre, I like it when they have a great balance of skill + randomness factor. I may not like Mortal Kombat for its gory thematic, but I think it's pretty neat that you have a specific set of inputs you can make to land a successful combo, so that way you can land some random kick or punch and then BAM, land a 5 hit combo; it requires simple memorization which you can master easily; it's not as stiff as Street Fighter where you can barely do 3 hit combos, but not as exaggerated as Marvel vs. Capcom where you can do 20+ hit combos but at the cost of needing to think fast to keep it going. My favorite thing about traditional 2D fighters is probably Super Arts/Special Moves, though. I normally attack just to fill my power bar in order to do nice, flashy, super damage-dealing attacks.

But nothing beats Smash in my book, because of how versatile that game is, and how downright hilariously chaotic a match can be. The possibilities are nearly endless with that game, so you are constantly experiencing something new, and you can make it as reliable on skill as you want, given the variety of play modes, items and stage gimmicks.
