Topic	Question for horror fans, did Scream save the horro genre?

The slasher/masked killer genre had gotten extremely stale but that doesn't represent the horror genre as a whole. Scream turned the genre as a whole on its head with the self-referential tone and meta style dialogue. It also was a pioneer in intentionally blending horror and comedy as opposed to what came before it. The post-modernism horror genre is all but credited to Scream. Not just slashers we're performing poorly prior to its release, as admitted by the directors and actors themselves at the time.
