The topic title seems to imply it.

The slasher/masked killer genre had gotten extremely stale but that doesn't represent the horror genre as a whole.


Scream turned the genre as a whole on its head with the self-referential tone and meta style dialogue. It also was a pioneer in intentionally blending horror and comedy as opposed to what came before it.

The post-modernism horror genre is all but credited to Scream. Not just slashers we're performing poorly prior to its release, as admitted by the directors and actors themselves at the time. IMO horror fans owe a lot to scream for giving us some of the greatest westernized horror films.
