"We were in separate rooms on different ends of the hall, and neither of us entered the other's room."

"Right," Raven joins in. "We stayed in our own rooms."

Mother looks at the two of you suspiciously, but you keep a straight face. Raven sips her punch to keep from looking nervous.

"Well," mother says, "what did you happen to do during your time there?"

"Well we did help some people," you say. "A boy was stung by a jellyfish, and Raven healed him."

"Yes, that is true," Raven says. "The boy's family was very thankful."

"And we stopped a prison break," you say.

"That is also true," Raven says. "Though, we learned later one of the criminals still escaped, but that wasn't on us."

"I was asking more about whether or not you went swimming somewhere," mother asks.

"Well of course we went swimming," you say. "It was Hawaii. But there were always people around, it wasn't like it was that romantic."

"Yeah," Raven says. "It wasn't all that romantic at all."

Your mother accepts that, but you also hide your sense of relief because that would just give it away.

Bret Wilmarth walks up and over to your father.

"I believe it's time, sir," he says to father.

"Yes, of course," father says. "Thank you, Bret."

Bret gives a small bow and then turns towards the many guests. He clears his throat to speak.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Bret booms with the help of Sound Magic. "Please gather 'round. It is time to present the gifts and tidings everyone has brought for the birthday of our host, Master Ronald Null."

Everyone applauds as they make their way towards the gazebo. Carter and some other butlers move the large table of gifts over and set it down carefully.

"Thank you, Bret," father says again. "Now, which gift should I open first?"
