Unlike CoD, which is super casual and much smaller-scale, they're kind of stuck. The only thing I could see livening it up would be extreme alternate history. Have an alternate WWII based on America staying out of WWI and it ending in a stalemate. Global politics from there could easily lead to "the imperialists" (Britain, France, Germany, Japan) vs "the anti-imperialists" (Soviet Union, Nationalist China, USA).
