LOST was a commercial network show planning an ending in advance, which was different than The Sopranos and its ability to have its desired ending a few years earlier on what was at the time a network for creator-driven shows with their own "niche" audiences. HBO grew because of that creator-driven high-quality streak, but regular networks didn't follow suit until ABC allowed LOST to go out on its own terms.
